Taping ranks among my preferred methods of providing support due to its notable effectiveness. Developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase in Japan during the 1970s, this technique has gained traction over the past 15 years as a viable option for animal treatment. Unlike massage, which involves tissue compression, taping relies on a skin decompression principle. Essentially, it lifts the skin, creating a more spacious environment for improved blood and lymph flow, thereby facilitating enhanced nutrient supply to the affected area. Moreover, this method triggers mechanoreceptors—nerve endings—which, in turn, decreases the activity of pain receptors (nociceptors). This natural process mitigates pain by inhibiting the firing of nociceptors. Taping finds utility in pain reduction, providing support, decreasing inflammation, and amplifying meridian flow post Shiatsu massage. In my practice, I utilize Vetkin tape, meticulously crafted for animals, boasting enhanced adhesion qualities.
Benefits:
- Pain reduction (back, shoulder, neck, knee instability, …)
- Improves lymphatic and blood circulation
- Reduces inflammation
- Supports muscles and joints
- Increases proprioception (aweareness of the body) – correct movement and muscle reeducation
- Stimulates nerves endings=mechanoreceptors = less pain receptors (nociceptors)
- Improves function of joints and muscles
- Speed up healing
- Reduces scar formation
- Can improve nerve signals
Contraindications:
- Infection
- Open wounds
- Malignant cancer
- Advanced kidney disease
- Congestive heart failure
- Deep vain thrombosis
